Nemausa renovated

nemausaThe wooden sculpture of Nemausa (plunging back to water – or the canal next to – where it has come from) was renovated this spring. I took pictures of it at the time, you can see them here. Now the statue, made of one large tree trunk, has been painted white, and should last again many years.

The sculpture/statue is a nice surprise along the canal leading to the Jardins de la Fontaine, many people stop by to take pictures of it – with of course a smile on their faces!

The picture was taken at the beginning of October, at the moment the trees aren’t that green anymore.

Street lamps by the canal of Nîmes

streetlampsThe August theme at City Daily Photo is street lamps. So, here’s a classy one, taken at the Quai de la Fontaine in Nîmes. The canal is lined by plane trees, and between every two trees there is a pair of classical French street lamps, or lampadaires.

Sure there are modern ones in the city, but my eye likes this one!

The CDP linky seems not working yet, so to see the streetlamps around the world, it’s better to click the latest category.

Statue of Nemausa under renovation

nemausa under restauration

One of my favourite statues here in Nîmes is the wooden Nemausa by François Godebski (1940–1977) next to the canal of the Jardins de la Fontaine. It’s made of one tree trunk, and resembles a woman, that is the goddes Nemausa, who has plunged through the pavement and is on her way back to the water where she belongs. Well, this is how I see it, at least.

The lady Nemausa had, however, gotten in a bad condition, and now the restauration work has begun. Two men are working on the wooden structure, removing the rotten parts, filling the hollow center with cement (I guess) and otherwise doing a delicate work to get Nemausa back to her… well, not feet, but let’s say, in shape.

The canal in March

canalLike everywhere in Europe right now, the weather is quite gloomy in Nîmes. Cloudy and rainy… and only occasionally sunny. Spring is late, but little by little the greenness is coming back. But not yet at the canal, or Quai de la fontaine, which leads us to the Jardins de la Fontaine. The fountain itself was off today, it should be seen in the distance.

On the other hand, it was this girl that stole my attention: her wear is very casual and yet very cute: the hood of her jumper has ears, just like the children’s hoods often have!
